The Apostle John wrote the gospel of St.
John, in the New Testament, in order to make it
very clear what Jesus claimed and who He
claimed to be. His purpose was to persuade us of the
deity of Jesus, the Savior of the world. God so loved us that He
became man and demonstrated His incomparable love (chapter 3) so
that whoever would believe in Jesus could have eternal life. John
wrote that Jesus was not only the Word speaking creation, in the
beginning, but that Jesus was and is God here and now.
The most important questions ever asked
were, "Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus come? Why did Jesus have to die?
and Why do we need Him?" READ John's gospel to find the
answers to these questions. Jesus didn't just say that He was a god,
or a way, that He taught the truth, or demonstrated life better than
anyone else. Jesus said,
I AM the bread of
life - who sustains you (chapter 6)
I AM the light of the world - who enlightens you (8 and 9)
I AM the door for the sheep - who protects you (10)
I AM the good shepherd - who guides you (10)
I AM the resurrection and the life - who gives you eternal life
(11)
I AM the way, the truth and the life - the way to Myself, God
(14)
I AM the true vine - the source of all fruitfulness (15)
He didn't just come
to be an example of how to perform better or to teach us to do
right; He said I AM the way, the truth and
the life! On the cross, He demonstrated His love and His
authority over nature, disease and death itself. That's what I want!
I choose to follow the only one claimed to be life and who is still
alive!
I would choose Jesus even if there were
another way, because I want to be forgiven, to be loved
and accepted unconditionally, to be healed and to have eternal life.
Eternal life is a new past and a new future. Even if reincarnation
were a viable option, I can't earn my way to Heaven with perfect
behavior, no matter how many chances I am given. Jesus came to offer
us life, died in our place and demonstrated that He has conquered
death for us.
Jesus demonstrated His divinity, love and
power, over and over, because He wants to be in
relationship with us. He changed water into wine (chapter 2), healed
a man's son (4), healed a lame man (5), fed the 5,000 miraculously
(6), walked on water (6), healed a blind man (9), and raised Lazarus
from the dead (11) etc. etc.
People understood who Jesus was claiming to
be. That's why He was accused and tried for claiming to
be God. He didn't deny it because He was/is God. Many testified that
Jesus was God: John the Baptist, Andrew, Nathaniel (chapter 1), the
blind man (9), Martha (11), and even doubting Thomas (20). Peter
said, "You are the Christ ... ." Even the Samaritans, who cared
nothing for Jews, also agreed that Jesus is the Messiah (4). A Roman
soldier, at the cross, said, "Surely this was the Messiah!" Jesus
was and is the Savior of the world (4, 11, 12).
Many religions claim
to have great leaders, but we have
confidence that Jesus proved His deity and demonstrated His ability
to give us eternal life. He said the Father is in Him and
He is in the Father (chapters 10, 14), He came from God (16), He was
sent by God (6, 11, 17), He is the Son of God (6, 11, 20) and that
He and the Father are one (10). He said if you have seen me, you
have seen the Father!
Jesus Christ fulfilled over 300 Old Testament
prophecies concerning His birth, life, death and
resurrection. The odds of anyone else ever fulfilling these
prophecies are incredible.
For one person to
fulfill even 48 of these prophecies, the number becomes staggering
--1 chance in 10 to the 157th power (1 with 157 zeros after it). Add
to that the 250 other prophecies and it becomes impossible for any
other person except Jesus to ever fit that particular sequence of
time and events.
In the book of 1
John, toward the end of the New Testament, our Father God has
assured us that we can be sure who Jesus is, that life is in Jesus
and that we have the life if we have Jesus.
Inviting Jesus to be our Lord and God
guarantees life here and for eternity.
1 John 5:11-13
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and
this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who
does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write
these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so
that you may know that you have eternal life. NIV
